About This Calculator

GasEVCalculator.com is a free, independent tool that helps car buyers compare the true total cost of ownership between electric vehicles and gas-powered alternatives. We have no affiliation with any automaker, dealer, or energy company.

Our calculator runs entirely in your browser. No data you enter is ever stored, transmitted, or shared. Your numbers stay private.

What we calculate

Total cost of ownership goes far beyond the sticker price. Our calculator accounts for all major cost factors over your chosen timeframe:

⚡ Fuel costs

Electricity cost per mile based on your local rate and vehicle efficiency, vs. gas cost per mile with annual price inflation.

🔧 Maintenance

Annual maintenance inputs for both vehicles. EV defaults reflect real-world data: no oil changes, less brake wear.

💰 Incentives

Federal Clean Vehicle Credit (up to $7,500) plus any state/local incentives you enter are subtracted from EV purchase cost.

🏦 Financing

Loan payments calculated using standard amortization for both vehicles based on your down payment, rate, and term.

🛡️ Insurance

Annual insurance costs entered separately for each vehicle type — EVs typically run 10–25% higher.

📅 Break-even

We find the exact year when cumulative EV costs dip below gas vehicle costs at your input assumptions.

Data sources

Default values in the calculator are based on national averages from the U.S. Department of Energy, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Reports, and EPA fuel economy data. We update defaults periodically to reflect current conditions.

The comparison table on the home page uses manufacturer MSRPs, EPA efficiency ratings, and industry cost-of-ownership estimates. Your actual costs will vary.

Limitations

This calculator does not account for depreciation, resale value, registration fees, state-specific utility rates (beyond what you enter), or future changes in electricity or gas prices beyond your entered inflation rate. It is a decision-support tool, not a financial guarantee.
